Dutch NOrmative DatabasE (NODE)

de Vos, M.T.

This dataset was compiled within the project Spread the new(s): understanding standardisation of Dutch through 17th-century newspapers (NWO Open Competition SSH, grant 406.18.TW.005). This project investigated how the Dutch standard language became functionally implemented in the early Early Modern period (1550-1700), hypothesising that newspapers played a crucial role in the expansion of the Dutch standard language, as the first mass medium read by all social classes. Adopting a bottom-up approach, the project first mapped out how the Dutch standard language took shape in normative works from the early Early Modern period (1550-1650). For this purpose, a corpus of normative works was compiled, entitled the Dutch NOrmative DatabasE (NODE), which is published here. The additional files detail the selection and annotation processes. Note that some of the annotations are in Dutch, due to the nature of the corpus.
