In the 2021 paper ‘The effect of expectations on experiences and engagement with an applied game for mental health’ induced expectations by the trailer manipulation were examined retrospectively; at the end of the experiment participants were asked about their impression and expectations of the game based on the trailer (although they already played the game). Because asking these questions right after viewing the trailer and before gameplay presumably would influence our outcome measures, we decided to ask these questions retrospectively at the end of the experiment. However, we also wanted to have a more pure measure of induced expectations (i.e., right after viewing the trailer) and therefore decided to conduct a pilot study in which we examined whether the two trailers are indeed inducing different types of expectations, in order to provide additional support for our manipulation. This dataset includes the pilot data, including demographics, impressions and expectations of the game based on the trailer, trailer message awareness, attractiveness and fun of the game based on the trailers.
